Who Is Frank Cox?
Topic: Frank Cox, Indianapolis 2008, Outpost Team| Written by: admin|Sometimes it is better to get scooped so one may offer more than a repeat of what may be found in Baptist Press. We have been busy asking around to find out more about Frank Cox. Here is what we have confirmed from several sources.
1. Frank Cox is a well known insider in the SBC having served on multiple committees in SBC life.
a. Past President of the Georgia Baptist Convention
b. Past 1st VP of the SBC
c. Member of Exec. Comm. for 9 years
d. SBC Funding Study Committee
e. Ad Hoc Cooperative Program Committee
f. SBC Resolutions Committee
2. Frank Cox is well known in Georgia, perhaps best known for preaching revivals for churches across the Southeast. He is willing to preach in churches of all sizes and not only “large” churches.
3. Frank Cox was one of three on the shortlist for President at Lifeway, along with Georgia Exec. Bob White
4. Junior Hill has told people he nominates Frank Cox out of concern for Mohler’s Calvinism. Thus, Cox is the non-Calvinist candidate.
5. Frank Cox is firmly in the old line pre-Frank Page mold. Thus, he and Mohler share much in common.
6. Frank Cox and Al Mohler would seem to have the same agenda, returning to more of a “pre Frank Page” SBC.
7. Frank Cox is considered to be the candidate of choice for the Georgia Baptist Exec position when the need for a replacement arises.
8. Frank Cox seemed to believe the SBC to be moving in the right direction so while President the the Georgia Baptist Convention it has been hard to recall any calls for reform.
The best we can tell, is that Frank Cox would be a Mohler without the Calvinism. If you think things were going just fine before Frank Page was elected, and you don’t like Calvinism, and want to see more missions giving and going, Frank Cox is your man.
We think Bill Wagner may get our vote.

For the record, I did not write this post, nor did I have any knowledge of its contents until Wade Burleson called me to ask if I wrote it. Moreover, in no way does this Outpost contributor endorse Bill Wagner. I have not, as of yet, determined how I’ll vote.
I do not have the reservations about Frank Cox, however, that my Outpost colleagues seem to have. I am anxious to hear who all the candidates for president will be. I understand that more announcements are forthcoming.

Mohler to undergo surgery, foregoes presidential nomination

Could someone please explain what “more missions giving and going” means. Does this imply that Page’s term as President saw a decrease in emphasis on missions that Cox’s would restore or something else?

Yes, he is well known - in Georgia.
And, I would unfortunately report, for being someone who is too interested in politically positioning himself in the Convention.
I find it all ironic. Why? Because of a conversation to which I was privy where he commented Jimmy Draper’s effort to alert us of the impending exodus of younger leaders from the SBC. Frank Cox commented that all it had produced was a bunch of whining young men demanding a place of political power in the convention. And now look who is running for the presidency.
Not exactly a representative personality I would want to put in front of the nation as our new face.
Let’s find someone who will keep building the bridges.

For the record, the post does not endorse any candidate. It simply is a non-endorsement of Frank Cox.

Todd,
For what it is worth, I have met Bill Wagner on a couple of occasions. He is articulate, thoughtful, and quite intelligent. I have heard that he has a platform - yes, an actual platform for the SBC - and the people who told me about it said they were duly impressed.
I am looking forward to reading the platform myself, and if it is substantive, I would find it refreshing to vote for someone who actually voices what it is he intends to do as President and sees it more as a position of service and not prestige.
Blessings,
Wade

Phil,
Dr. Cox would be a great representative for the SBC. He is a great leader who loves people and loves pastors young and old. If he were so interested in political positioning he would have tried for the presidency two years ago when he was under great pressure to run.
Also, you should probably put your full name when you accuse someone of making a statement that you can’t prove or back-up.
Cox will have my vote.

Phil,
Dr. Cox will be a bridge builder!
He preaches at churches of every size. He is also a friend to pastors who lead small, medium, and large churches.
He is a big church pastor with a small church heart. He will lead our convention to be pure doctrinally and passionate evangelistically.
My post is based on activities I have observed the past 12 years here in the great state of GA!

Somebody help me out here. Was it the GA convention that passed that silly resolution on blogging?
February 15th, 2008 at 12:29 am
Yeah.
The purpose of the resolution wasn’t to try and get people to refrain from blogging.
The intent of the resolution was to discourage character assassination and disunity in the Body of Christ.

“The intent of the resolution was to discourage character assassination and disunity in the Body of Christ.”
In other words: No negative truths about the leaders.
Did Cox speak out in favor of this blog resolution?

Do you think there is a difference between attacking a person and attacking their actions?
I am not sure if Cox spoke out in favor of this resolution. I don’t think he did. The only way to be sure is to review the minutes.
Do you know how to access the minutes?

Concerning point #8 in the original post, Dr. Cox was president of the GBC 10 years ago. A lot has changed in SBC life since then, he might see the need for some change now.

Hey, if electing this dude would help the Braves climb back into a pennant race, we might have to to talk….
Or, of course, snag us some Masters badges!

Robin,
What you have to understand is that the goal in SBC life today is numbers, and not REAL numbers, but numeric goals. Frank Page never announced a goal of 1,000,001 or more baptisms for his term in office. His lack of a goal represents a decline from the previous goal of 1,000,000 baptisms. :-b

“Do you think there is a difference between attacking a person and attacking their actions?”
Hmmm. I am wondering how the person who did the ‘action’ would NOT think it was NOT an attack on ‘him’ personally. After all, we ARE our actions. We do them. We cannot separate ourselves from our actions.
I know this thinking does well on Dr. Phil but in reality, it is pretty thin.

Wade,
Thanks for the contribution.
It may have been better to say, we, as in The Outpost Team, are not endorsing any candidate. I believe Paul offered an interview with Wagner on the Outpost just after it was announced he would be nominated last fall.
