What point does this serve, Ben? I imagine it will make a lot of people mad and they’ll attack you for comparing Dr. Patterson to a Mafia murderer. But I have a different view: Dr. Patterson is not our problem. He’s just a person. We battle not against flesh and blood. If you are ever successful at taking him down, another one just like him will take his place. WE are the problem and our sins have been institutionalized. We just get led around by the loudest voice that claims to know how we should think about things and we say that it is good. As I stated on Wade’s blog, the problem is ultimately not Dr. Patterson. The problem is us. Southern Baptists are the ones who allow themselves to be led in directions beyond their own confession of faith by people who have large personalities and can tell home spun stories to get the crowd worked up. It’s what we want. We don’t think about the issues deeply enough to notice the inconsistencies or follow things out to their logical conclusions - conclusions that lead us far away from what we know the Bible to actually say.

No, Ben. Dr. Patterson is not the problem. We are. He is just a reflection of us.
I say, let him be and leave him to God to deal with.

The only way to win any kind of victory here is to stop worrying about the portion of the SBC that goes after this kind of thing, disciple Christians to follow Christ and not man, and build churches that reflect a dependence upon Christ and His Word. When that yeast works through the dough, maybe God will have implanted something beautiful to change the world.

Don’t you see, people? This is not about Sheri and her family’s financial concerns; it’s about Vendetta. I urge all to distance themselves from these perpetrators — “Where the carcase is, there the vultures will gather.”

  3. Hijo de Juan Says:

Oh my gosh! I never noticed the resemblance before, but it is uncanny!

I can almost hear Miz Dorothy answering the telephone: “The Patterson residence, the lady of the house speaking…”

  4. Dave Miller Says:

And still, he sinks lower and lower.

Alan, I tend to agree with you in some respects. Although this whole episode (and it is ONE episode in a saga) has been very eye opening for some of us. And it has nothing to do with Patterson, actually. It has everything to do with how SBC pastors and others have ‘responded’ to the blatant injustice with the compassion of John Gotti himself. Sometimes I cringe wondering what Patterson would have to do to cause them to question him at all. You are right. It says more about us than it does about Patterson. My exact words about Clinton being elected twice.

These are people who will line up to publicly pray for Mohler but who talk like Klouda was in horrible sin and would not spit on her if she were on fire.

This has been both enlightening and scary for me to see what we are turning out of our seminaries and churches. I have met merchant marines with more humanity.

cloe, you have stumped me. What is the ‘Vendetta’ with a capital V? Did Ben not get invited to a soiree at Pecan Manor?

    Perpetrators? (sigh)

  6. Wayne Smith Says:

    Ben,

Very, Very, Wise Words from our Brother Alan Cross. Ben you have a lot of Brothers and Sisters Praying for you. God will take Care of this Sickness the has infected the SBC/CR.

    Happy Easter
    In His Name
    Wayne

  7. Kerygma Says:

    Cloe, it’s “carcass.”

  8. Ranger Says:

It’s a shame that Ben has to use this situation to make distasteful jokes, from which only he gets a laugh. What a terrible, terrible post.

  9. jallen Says:

You’ve really crossed the line this time! How dare you draw “our Hyachinth” into this mess!
